Being Thankful
There are many reasons that we should always be sure to be thankful. In expressing thankfulness, we shift our focus from the negative to positive. Being thankful allows for more joy and contentment in our lives. However, it can be sometimes difficult maintaining a positive outlook during challenging times. For example, many of us are searching for the good during this pandemic. This period in our lives has been most challenging. The events that have taken place are unprecedented. We hear about those affected all around us. Their plight has often been highlighted in the media in an effort from the enemy to make us forget our ever-present blessings. This time has also showed us what is most important in life. We have quickly discovered that it is not our jobs, clothes, or degrees that give life meaning. These things can be quickly taken away, or destroyed. Instead, we have discovered how temporal material possessions and life truly are.
The Word of God reminds us that we can and should be thankful in every situation in 1st Thessalonians 5:18:
“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
There is power in being thankful. God encourages us to always be thankful. It is also through our current thankfulness that we can obtain even more than what we had before. However, we have to display thankfulness over what we currently have. If and when we learn to appreciate what God has already given, then we can be responsible for more. I like the idea of being considered responsible and accountable to God. Therefore, we have to ensure that we continue to strive to make thankfulness a consistent way of life. We do this in the same way that we strive to live Holy every day. If we do so, we will be considered an example for others and help to lead God’s people to the Kingdom.
